I am loving the recent conversation over at RATTLE around ‘ curating‘ poems and am eager to see the outcome. I haven’t posted the other poems because of issues with sending them along later to publishers and the whole notion of being ‘previously published’ versus ‘unpublished’. I owe them a debt of gratitude as I build my chapbook, day-by-day. A month of creating poetry out of thin air to a prompt created by the brilliant folks at National Poetry Writing Month. I am so grateful to the folks behind the scenes for both contests as they give us prompts and creative energy for writing poetry.Īs usual, I am involved in a writing contest of sorts. So, GOOD LUCK to all who are joining this 48-hour challenge and continued poetic brilliance to all those participating in #NAPOWRIMO! I completed my twenty-first poem this morning. I guess I should be happy they didn’t all come at once! The debate about the colour of a dress had people divided but it was a great learning exercise in illumination.Ĭome Monday morning, I will be up and running, as usual! Perhaps a little worse for the wear after tousling with poetically challenging words, like the ones posted here from previous years that I participated: treacle, garrulous, sententious, putative, furuncle, absquatulated, gnathic, peristeronic, nubivagant, and noctambulant. It was a good exercise, but the outcome didn’t get me Editor’s Choice, like the poem from the words in 2013, which produced ‘Vegas Baby’. This was my first draft and I ended up doing about fifteen rewrites and edits. This photo is from the CV2 2-Day Poem Contest in 2015 where my theme was a viral phenomenon on the Internet over the colour of a dress depicted in a photograph. I never know when (or if) the muse will hit, and I can’t miss the chance by being out and about without paper and pen and ways to capture the elusive words that may (or may not) come…

I also usually let folks know I am going to be participating in the contest ALL WEEKEND, which means I won’t be around for chatting or visiting. At midnight (Manitoba time) the words will magically drop into inboxes of contestants all over the country and beyond! I always share this important warning when speaking with other poets about preparing for the contest, as the first year I played, I lost two hours while waiting for midnight in British Columbia! So check this handy guide for time zones in your area.

The annual CV2 2-Day Poem Contest is about to begin.
